Playing with audio

Without paying for the upgrade (which I’m trying to refrain from doing as a way to stay on the same level as all of you), you can add new post then go to the button in the toolbar in WordPress that looks like musical notes.  Instead of uploading, you can select “from URL” and I entered the URL of where I uploaded my mp3 file on my UVic server space.  You can start to do audio blogs this week if you so choose (or next week…). Here is my sample audio file from the Audacity tutorial:
Valerie\’s sample audio post from the screen capture tutorial

(I think I had the audio mic set to the wrong device (webcam and not headset), so excuse the poor volume, but I’m sure yours will be better).

Playing with video…

January 18, 2010 Leave a comment

One student commented on the need to upgrade the wordpress account to be able to upload video.  With no required $100-$200 text, I expect students will allot equivalent $$ to the purchase of technologies needed to pursue their interests in this course (whether it be a license of Dreamweaver – but there is a 30-day free evaluation version – or an upgrade for wordpress video, etc.).  That said, you *CAN* upload your video to youtube and link to it here. Check out the following video from youtube by a respected academic in educational technology – this is done with a free/basic wordpress account.

In your new post window, you can click on the video icon (just left of the musical notes), then click on the “from URL” tab to get to a spot where you can insert the URL of your video file.

Ahhh… what to write…

January 17, 2010 Leave a comment

I have been asked for ideas on what to write to kick off their blog posting. Here are some:

Reflect on what it means to be in an online course perhaps. Check out some of the edtech bloggers on my edci339 blogroll (couros, siemens, etc.). If something is interesting there, write about it and why you found it interesting. See if any other students are blogging yet – if any made an interesting comment, then you could quote/refer to it in your blog post. Consider the delivery options mentioned perhaps, and what you think of them. What do you value/think is important as a university student? Also, check out twitter, get an account, and review some of the people I follow on my swirvine account (I tend to be very discerning in who I follow). Most are the best minds in ed tech. Check out their micro-blogging on twitter and comment on what stands out for you – either in the content or the process of tweeting and how it can be made to work for you (as opposed to being meaningless).

Added bits and bobs

I’ve updated our course blog so you can see a few edtech bloggers. Feel free to peruse their posts and incorporate them into your weekly reflections. I have also added my personal twitter feed to update you on news/developments.

If you’re interested in learning more advanced options within blogging, please check out:
